Garden tour and two-course lunch with wine at 4* Mount Pleasant Hotel
We’re thrilled to have the rare opportunity to visit Lord Kirkham’s Grade II listed estate and 100-acres of parkland which emulate its Victorian features. Head Gardener Ian Fretwell will enlighten guests on how to transform an industrial landscape into a serene oasis and wildlife haven.
Sheltered by many fine specimen trees, the mild climate and low rainfall has allowed many plants to grow that would not be considered hardy so far north. The two-acre walled kitchen garden nurtures melon pits, a forcing house and heated wall. In the thatched summer house there is a restored Rider hot air engine dating back to the 1880’s which was once used to pump water from a well in the Arboretum into the kitchen garden and glasshouses. During the tour guests will see it supplying a small water feature in the flourishing Fernery. Throughout the 40-acre pleasure grounds, Lord Kirkham’s passion for contemporary art has inspired both the formal
and semi-formal gardens. This visit will be full of surprises!
